THE INNER-KARST, THE GREEN KARST REGION

The area of Bloke, Cerknica, Ilirska Bistrica, Logatec, Loška Dolina, Pivka and Postojna municipalities is distinctive for its unique natural and cultural landscape. It’s known after vast forests and characteristic karst phenomena: intermittent lakes, poljes, dolines, ponors, sinkholes and many others. The intact area gives protection to many endangered animal and plant species and as much as 54% of the area is protected under the Natura 2000 regime. With 50.000 inhabitants in the area of 1.100 km² it is placed among the rarest inhabited areas in Slovenija.

The unique characteristics of the area represent an opportunity for the economic development according with sustainable principles; the use of its energy potential by using renewable energy sources and further development of tourism, one respectful and preserving towards the great natural heritage of the area. On this basis the municipalities decided for a common developmental concept; where they will, together with other public and private sector and all the inhabitants make true the vision of the development of all the areas of interest. The vision of development was united under the slogan “The Green Karst”, which directly emphasizes the lands’ characteristics – the world of Green Karst. It encompasses the forested karst, a unique feature in Slovenija.

The Green Karst region is the first region in Slovenija which decided to promote and stimulate the development of the whole area based on traditional bases and principles of sustainable development. This makes it fundamentally different from other Slovene regions. The added value and the developmental progress are enabled on the basis of preserved and healthy environment and respect of traditions. The inhabitants with their active cooperation importantly contribute to the regional progress by increasing the recognition and reputation of The Green Karst in home environment and outside its borders. That’s why the Green Karst will remain as it is, as we know it for centuries – a safe, intact space where new ideas are born.
