About the Inner-Karst Region
The Inner-Karst statistical region encompasses the municipalities of Bloke, Cerknica, Ilirska Bistrica, Loška dolina, Pivka and Postojna, with a total surface area of 1,456km2 (7.2% of the surface area of Slovenia).
It has 51,483 inhabitants. In terms of surface area, it is one of the smaller regions in Slovenia. It is also the most sparsely populated region in Slovenia (35/km2) – it has one fifth of the most densely populated region – the Central Slovenia statistical region. The high population growth rate, especially due to immigration, has been contributing to the increase in population density in the last few years.
In terms of economy, the region is one of the weakest in the country, as it contributes only 1.9% to the GDP of Slovenia. A large share of the companies in the secondary and tertiary sectors are craft businesses (services, especially woodworking and metalworking); these constituted almost a half (46.4%) in 2006, which is much more than in the region of Central Slovenia, which has the least number of craft businesses. On average, the companies in the region have 5 employees, placing them amongst the smallest in the country. The economy is viable and export-oriented, and the population is professionally trained.
Although the rate of work activity in the region is the highest in the country, a large number of the inhabitants of the Inner-Karst region commute to work to the neighbouring regions, and the economic strength of the population is thus relatively high. The number of children in kindergartens is the lowest in comparison with other regions. The national and regional road network is relatively well developed and enables good accessibility inside and outside the region, especially in the direction towards Ljubljana, Koper and Reka.
